Suckoo concerned: Not enough done to protect marine life

(From nationnews.com) – Preservation of Barbados” marine life is constantly being ignored, the Minister responsible for Environment, Dr Esther Byer Suckoo has said. Speaking at the launch on Monday of a symposium on Marine Ecosystem Based Management (EBM)in the Caribbean, the minister referred specifically to the over-harvesting of sea-egg, which has led to the extension of a government ban on reapingthe local delicacy.

Byer-Suckoo said that for 2007 it was estimated that the fishing industry contributed $19.2 million to Barbados Gross Domestic Product and noted that throughout the world, the environment upon which the fishing industry relies has been under threat from habitat degradation from pollution, over-exploitation and conflicts due to competing resource users.

Over 16 countries are expected to be part of the symposium from December 10 to 12 and Shell Western Supply and Trading is the main sponsor for the event.
