Reports of Japan reducing its whale catch

(From radioaustralia.net.au)-  Reports say Japan may reduce the number of whales it plans to catch this summer. Japan”s whaling fleet is expected to depart for its annual Southern Ocean hunt within the next few days. A report in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper says the target catch for this year”s hunt is set to be reduced.

It says instead of the planned 850 minke whales, the fleet will target 700, a reduction of around 20 per cent.  But a spokesman for Japan’s Fisheries Agency is denying the report. He says there are no plans to reduce the catch target.
