(From canada.com) – The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has red-listed B.C.”s Pacific sockeye salmon as a threatened species. The study found that of the 33 B.C. subpopulations assessed, 12 were threatened with declines of up to 93 per cent. Most of the threatened subpopulations are from B.C.”s two main salmon rivers: five from the Fraser River and three from the Skeena.
“Stronger habitat enforcement is necessary to reverse these declines,” said David Suzuki Aquatic biologist Jeffery Young.
“Clearly this highlights the urgent need for Canada to do much more to conserve wild salmon,” said Craig Orr, executive director of the Watershed Watch Salmon Society.
