Exploration licences threaten marine life

Conservationists are calling on the Federal Government to protect South Australian marine life by putting a stop to offshore petroleum exploration. The Federal Government has this week opened up seven new areas for petroleum exploration in South Australian waters.

Michelle Grady from the conservation alliance group Save Our Marine Life, says unique South Australian wildlife will suffer if exploration goes ahead.

“Well we’re talking about the iconic southern right whale that comes into this region every year, around this time of year with its calves,” she said.

“We’re talking about other threatened species, we’re talking about very important sea floor communities.”

“Polling has shown that 75 per cent of the community want to see much higher levels of protection than we currently have, and we are confident that they will be putting that message to the Federal Government to ensure that in the next year we see marine sanctuaries put in place.”
