100m Tonnes Clog Our Seas

(From sundaymail.co.uk) – There are 100 million tonnes of plastic polluting the world”s oceans – and the UK is a major contributor to the problem.  British households generate around five million tonnes of packaging refuse a year – and 1.2 million tonnes of that is plastic.

Consumer groups reckon we also buy 13 billion plastic bottles of water every year. But scientists warn less than four per cent of that plastic is recycled.

Fish, seabirds, dolphins, turtles and seals mistake plastic for food, causing sickness and death.

In tests, 90 per cent of albatross chick carcasses had plastic in their stomachs.
