Wildlife officials say heavy rains killing fish in Florida

(From miamiherald.com) Orlando, Florida – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says several different species have been effected including largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie and catfish. Officials expect the problem to worsen as Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike approach.

The heavy rains wash debris, plant and animal material into the water which stirs up sediment. As the debris decays it uses dissolved oxygen in the water faster than it can be replaced.

Officials also say the dark skies prevent algae from producing oxygen.

The fish then come to the surface gasping for oxygen and ultimately die.
