(By Care2 and ThePetitionSite Team) Supporters of whale hunting are trying to boost their position by claiming that the depletion in fish stocks comes from too many whales. But this is a misrepresentation of the facts. Support real science to protect our oceans and its inhabitants. If current trends continue, studies show that in 50 years there will be no commercial fish stock left. But the fish stocks are dwindling because of overfishing, not because whales are eating them.
Those who try to claim otherwise are simply not using facts. The population of whales has declined just as much as that of other ocean inhabitants. Indeed, areas that are fished for human consumption are only 1 percent of the feeding grounds for marine mammals. Time is running out for the oceans, and the problems are caused by overfishing, not a ban on whale hunting.
Urge President Bush to fully fund ocean programs to restore our endangered ocean ecosystems .
