Ship propeller likely caused whale’s injuries

A Humpback whale spotted with deep gashes in its back in Barkley Sound by Ucluelet guides yesterday was most likely hit with a boat propeller.

Local biologist Wendy Szaniszlo said the ten cuts in the whale”s back definitely look like they are a result of a collision with a vessel.

Though not much can be done for the whale, she said many whales with propeller injuries survive.

Whale injuries are preventable if boats slow down, especially in local waters where Humpbacks are still very close to shore, local experts say. Read Full Article by Sarah Douziech (Canada)
