(From elcomercio.com) – Scientists, experts, environmental organizations, artisanal fishermen, marine biology students and public entities officials from 12 countries of Central and Southern Americas call into question the shark scene.
Enzo Acuna, IUCN-Chile, puts on stage the shark finning issue. In his opinion, are not national fleets which encourage the practice of cutting the fins of sharks and not take their meat. “Mostly foreign fleets come from Europe and Asia”, he says.
320 Mexican vessels catch an average of 30,000 tons of shark per year, says Raul Villasenor, the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries Aztec representative.
The surveillance tasks in that country aim at raising awareness among fishermen to avoid catching inmature species.
