Whales and seals are being hunted to extinction. Paul Watson, a young Canadian conservationist, is determined to stop that, even it costs him his life. Three times, on the ice floes off Labrador, he threw himself between baby harp seals and their killers. He sprayed the pups with harmless red dye, rendering their white pelts commercially useless. He was beaten, nearly drowned, jailed. Against Soviet and Japanese whalers, he raced his kamikaze inflatable dinghy to a blocking position between harpooner and whale.
Then, with his own boat, the Sea Shepherd, supported by Cleveland Amory”s Fund for Animals, Watson rammed the pirate whaler Sierra off Portugal. The Sea Shepherd was confiscated. As revelers celebrated New Year”s Eve, 1979-80, Watson scuttled her. Five weeks later, with Watson back in Canada, the pirate whaler mysteriously blew up in Lisbon and sank.
Paul Watson”s amazing life is recounted by a distinguished journalist, Warren Rogers, as Watson told it to him. Each incredible feat, including Watson”s covert mission to Wounded Knee during the 1973 siege, after which he was inducted into the Oglala Sioux tribe, is set down in “you are there” detail.
