Fishermen shot family of three polar bears in self-defence

A family on a fishing trip in the Atammik area shot and killed three polar bears on Sunday after they had been unable to scare them off.

According to the family, the bears approached their camp after catching scent of the fish.

‘I was frightened to death,’ said Ane Sethsen, who was together with her family on the fishing trip. ‘They came right up to the tents and started sniffing them. The women in our group ran off while the men tried to chase them off with sticks.’

She said that when that didn’t work, the men were forced to shoot the mother and her two cubs.

Sørensen said the bears appeared well fed. Their stomachs, however, contained only grass and seaweed. ‘So they must have been starving,’ she said.

Forty kilograms of bear meat will be donated to a nursing home in Atammik. The rest of the animals’ remains, including the heads and the pelts were taken into custody by Nuuk hunting wardens.

Polar bears are a protected species in Greenland. Limited hunting is permitted between September and June. It is illegal to shoot mothers with cubs, but hunting official Ole Heinrich said the family had not violated any laws by shooting the bears. ‘And they called us to report the incident,’ he added.

He said there was no rule of thumb for what to do when humans meet polar bears. ‘Some people have time to call and ask, others just have to act right away.’
