(From newtownabbeytoday.co.uk) – No-one will be prosecuted for a pollution incident which led to a major fish kill on the Sixmilewater river this summer, it has been revealed. Thousands of fish were killed and other aquatic life wiped out on the Sixmile and its tributary the Ballymartin River in July when a pollutant leaked into the watercourse.
The finger of blame was almost immediately pointed at businesses in the nearby Mallusk Industrial Estate, but efforts by pollution officers to trace the culprit have proved fruitless.
Despite hopes that the polluter would be found and prosecuted, Pollution Officer Mark Livingstone this week said that there was nothing more they could do.
Two major pollution incidents on the Ballymartin and Sixmilewater rivers over the summer months led to the destruction of tens of thousands of fish.
It is understood that the company responsible for the first incident is still being pursued by Environment Agency officials.
