No Compromise On Whaling: Garrett

The Rudd government says it will not soften its opposition to whaling at an international meeting in Chile next week.

The coalition has accused the government of surrendering to Japan after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd indicated Australia would take a more diplomatic approach to the disagreement between the two countries over whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said the government would not compromise its strong opposition to Japan’s whaling program when the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meets.

“We are not about compromising our position at all when we go to the IWC,” he told ABC Radio on Thursday.

“We brought forward the most substantial reform agenda that has been introduced to this commission ever.”
