Linda’s a Tough Old Bloke

(From smh.com.au) He is, despite being named Linda, one tough little penguin. When found by life savers on Bronte Beach on March 17, he was just one more victim of the deadly rubbish abandoned along the coast by thoughtless humans. Entangled in an abandoned fishing line, his left flipper had been severed, leaving him floundering on a mangled stump.

It estimates thousands of sea creatures die along Sydney”s coast every year after becoming entangled in fishing lines, or swallowing hooks, plastic bags and party balloon.

“He was thin and had some feathers missing from the top of the head, which suggests something had been attacking him,” the hospital’s manager, Libby Hall, says.

“There is an incredible amount of debris out there,” she says. “Only a tiny percentage of animals get brought in. The rest are swept away or are eaten by other animals.

“Balloons and plastic bait bags are a very big problem,” Hall says, adding that turtles, which live on jellyfish, often confuse them with food.
