The Celtic Knights of the Sea will host a fundraiser for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the 1078 Gallery on March 7 at the gallery. The event includes music by The Celtic Knights of the Sea Men”s Choir, Rob Davidson & Geoff Baker, Barbara Manning, Jason Cassidy & The Party, The Taylor Sisters, Matt Brown & Becky Anker, Karen J. Brown & Dave Silva, Ron & Preston Pope, Zach Zeller, Caitlin Brennan and The Shimmies.
Doors for the 1078 Gallery, 820 Broadway, open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10. Sea Shepherd T-shirts will be on sale and there will be a raffle for artist Jake Early’s whale print. Proceeds from the event will be split between the 1078 Gallery and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization.
“When the gallery approached me about doing a reading or singing, I knew I wanted to help but thought I’d much rather organize an event that I’d like to attend,” said Steve Metzger, a member of the Celtic Knights of the Sea, a Chico State University professor and writer. “I have been interested in marine biology all my life, acutely aware of the horrible situation of our oceans. I thought this event would be more interesting than my reading and it would also be a great way to raise money for two good causes — the Sea Shepherds and 1078 Gallery.
The evening also features what Metzger describes as a compelling video of the Sea Shepherds in action and guest speaker Jonathan Stern, a San Francisco State University biology professor and Minke Whale expert. Each of the musical acts will read short excerpts from “Moby Dick.” Call the gallery at 343-1973 for details.
“We’re packing a lot into one evening. Each act or performance will be about six minutes so things will move along quickly,” Metzger said. “It’s going to be an epic night.”
