Fishing Nets Leave Turtles Flapping For Their Lives

(From dnaindia.com) – More than 25 sea turtles were rescued in the last 45 days after they were found entangled in fishing nets left behind by fishermen along the city coast.

“They will take at least a month to recover and we will then hand them over to the Wildlife Department for rehabilitation,” Khanna said. Environmentalists have contended that failure to equip fishing nets with the turtle excluder devices have led to the death of 150,000 turtles a year worldwide.

Thousands of sea turtles get drowned each year in Asian waters after they get trapped in shrimp nets. Some 12,000 Ridley turtles have been washed up on the coasts of Orissa, this year.
