Environmentalists: Blast fishing is killing dolphins

A leading Nicaraguan conservation group says it knows what’s killing the dolphins that were found washed ashore in León last week: blast fishing—the illegal and indiscriminate practice of fisherman throwing explosives into the water to kill everything within the blast range.

Fabio Buitrago, a marine biologist with the Nicaraguan Foundation for Sustainable Development (FUNDENIC), says the three dead dolphins and dead calf whale found on northern Pacific beaches last week had similar types of injuries to other dead dolphins found in areas were fisherman were known to use dynamite to fish….
