Endangered dolphin at further risk

Illegal fishers are threatening an already endangered dolphin.

There are just 100 Maui”s dolphins left in the world and the Ministry of Fisheries says they are being put at even more risk by fishers using set nets illegally.

Operational manager Greg Keys says the nets are banned on the west coast of the North Island from Maunganui Bluff in Northland to south of Mokau in the New Plymouth region.

The ban also extends inside the mouth of the Manukau Harbour. It has been in place since 2003 but Mr Keys says the ministry is still finding people illegally set netting.
