(From whyalla.yourguide.com.au)- Dolphins are the latest target of Whyalla youths with nothing better to do. During the school holidays, youths have been spotted on the boat mooring pontoons, luring dolphins to them with fish and then trying to drop large rocks on them. “They had crab nets with tommys and used that to attract the dolphins,” Marina Sports Association vice president Wayne Carn said.
Mr Carn contacted the Whyalla News last week with his concerns, saying his association was made aware of the situation at a recent meeting.
“I’m just so worried about it,” he said. “A dolphin is a gift of a sign of peace and comfort like a white dove.”
This appalling act of cruelty can attract up to four years in jail and a maximum $20,000, before taking into account the trespassing charges that could be laid.
Unfortunately, it could be residents and toursits who are putting these dolphins lives at risk by feeding them.
It has been a well-known fact in recent years that Whyalla has friendly marina dolphins who do enjoy being fed.
