Dolphin found on beach dies

A dolphin found a week ago on the beach in Pass Christian died over the weekend. Moby Solangi, president of the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies, said Monday the animal had too many health problems and couldn’t be saved.
“He had too many complications,” Solangi said. “We tried our best to keep him going, but his heart gave out.”

People on the beach spotted the dolphin Feb. 17 and called the Harrison County Sand Beach Department. Workers with that department called the institute, and employees there brought the dolphin to its facility in Gulfport.

Volunteers helped keep the animal afloat 24 hours a day while the veterinarian treated him for parasites, respiratory issues and heart problems.

“All the intervention just couldn’t keep him alive,” Solangi said, adding that what workers learned from the experience will help other animals in the future.

“What we learned will help us know what’s going on in the environment and with the animals.”
