Chilean Coasts Will Be A Whale Sanctuary

(From elmundo.es) – The Chilean government, which hosted the IWC in June and which was attended by 80 countries, announced they would create a whale sanctuary in its waters banning the hunting of these animals throughout its territory. The decision reflects the voice of Latin americas against the hunting of whales and in favour of whale-watching.

Shortly after the summit, the Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet travelled to the old and now disused whaling factory in Quintay, on the coast of Santiago de Chile. Once there, the president signed a bill that declares the territorial waters as a sanctuary free of whaling. “We chose this place because it represents the past, but what we are doing today is a task for the future.”
