California Tangles With U.S. To Save Turtles

(From sfgate.com)- California lawmakers are tussling with federal officials over the fate of the leatherback turtles that feed on jellyfish in Monterey Bay and nearby coastal areas, and migrate thousands of miles each year across the Pacific to lay their eggs in nests on Indonesia”s beaches.

The Legislature has passed a resolution calling on the government to deny or delay permits to commercial fishermen who harvest swordfish in California waters and who want to deploy long lines bearing thousands of baited hooks in the same shallow waters where the turtles forage.

Marine biologists who track migration patterns of both leatherback and loggerhead turtles say populations of both species are in critical danger – that leatherbacks face possible extinction within 25 years and the loggerheads within 50.
