Bill Seeks To Protect Leatherback Turtle Habitat

(From journalcr.com)- A new bill, No. 16.915, currently being studied in Congress, is seeking to protect the habitats of leatherback turtles, specifically in within the Las Baulas Marine National Park in Guanacaste.  The bill builds on the fact that Costa Rica has been internationally recognized as a key nesting area for the large sea turtles, which are in danger of extinction. However, populations of leatherback turtles in Costa Rica have declined to dangerous levels, to the point that the number of reptiles that laid their eggs on the country’s beaches have gone from 1,800 in 1988 to only 58 in 2007, according to documents being reviewed by members of the Legislative Assembly.
