African Penguins May Be Extinct Soon

(From thetimes.co.za)- African penguins caught in the recent oil spills off the Cape Town coast have more to worry about, they might be extinct within 16 years. Venessa Strauss, chief executive of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, said this scientific prediction was based on current trends. In the 1900s, there were about 4-million African penguins in the wild. This dropped to 450 000 birds in 1950 and to 200 000 in 2000,” she said. During the past 14 days, the foundation has cared for 80 penguins that were mired in oil and rescued along the peninsula. “The oil causes their feathers to clump together and expose the penguin’s skin to the cold water. The result is that they are found cold, emaciated and dehydrated on the beach.”
