(From mycentraljersey.com) Jersey ShoreAn estimated eight to 12 bottlenose dolphins, including some calves, were in the Navesink River over the weekend, and federal officials cited three people for harassing them, according to a federal official.

So far this month, a total of 11 people have been cited for harassing dolphins under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act, according to Teri Frady, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Woods Hole, Mass.

“The investigations are ongoing,” Frady said Wednesday. “The persons who (were) cited will get a letter and that can be anything from a warning to fine.”

Fines may reach $10,000 and can be appealed, according to e-mail from Frady.
