What’s killing turtles in Lake Macquarie?

(From theherald.com.au)- A turtle found dead at Lake Macquarie has prompted calls from residents for urgent autopsies to uncover the cause of the ancient mariner”s plight. Scottish holiday maker Sandra Boyd stumbled upon the green sea turtle washed up on the bank of Carey Bay on Tuesday night, taking the tally of dead turtles found at the lake in the past fortnight to three. “There is no evidence to suggest that any of these turtles were deliberately killed, but rather died of natural causes . . . possible causes include ingestion of marine debris including fish hooks and plastic bags,” she said.

A National Parks and Wildlife Service spokesman said autopsies had not been carried out because the dead turtles were too decomposed.
