Wayward seal killed by passing vehicle in Newark

(From chicoer.com) Newark, California- A wayward seal pup that wandered onto a busy suburban roadway east of San Francisco has died after being struck by a passing vehicle. Wildlife rescuers had just arrived Saturday morning to tend to the injured elephant seal pup when it died from injuries suffered hours earlier on the Newark street.

Newark police Sgt. John Kovach said the driver who struck the seal did not stop. Kovach said the driver may not have known the animal had been hit because the seal was the same color as the road. The same street near the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay Wildlife Refuge was closed for three hours Thursday when a seal wandered into traffic. Biologists did not know if it was the same animal killed Saturday.
