MP Says Whaling Commission Outdated

(from New Zeland) The Conservation Minister sees next week”s meeting of the International Whaling Commission as a crucial point in the long-running row over Japan”s actions in the Southern Ocean.

Steve Chadwick is travelling to Chile on Monday for the 60th meeting of the organisation. She says New Zealand remains deeply concerned about whaling in the Southern Ocean and rejects the idea that whaling is needed to get information on whale populations. She plans to continue pushing for whale protection.

Ms Chadwick says for years members of the Commission have been divided over whaling and the meetings have been marked by confrontation. She says if real protection for whales is to be achieved the IWC has to adopt a new approach. She says reform is important and she will be lobbying for the Commission to modernise.
