Sin embargo, no puedo sentirme orgulloso de Dinamarca. Es un país que apoya y alienta tremendas crueldades en ballenas y focas contribuyendo a la extinción de muchas especies de animales. Dinamarca se defiende ‘valerosamente’ de los fundamentalistas musulmanes a través de tiras cómicas sin embargo, se muestra indiferente a la matanza en masa de las especies de fauna marina. La espantosa masacre anual de miles de indefensos calderones en las Islas Faeroe es tan cruel como la matanza de delfines en Taiji por los japoneses. Los niños de las Islas Faeroe tienen un nivel de mercurio en sus cuerpos mucho mayor que el de los niños de Taiji en Japón. Durante años he luchado contra balleneros y autoridades de las Islas Faeroe. En 1985 y 1986 tuvimos dramáticos enfrentamientos en aguas de las Faeroe y de nuevo en el 2000 intentando impedir que cercaran los calderones hacia la orilla, donde manadas enteras son acuchilladas, ensartadas, apedreadas y golpeadas en una feroz orgía de brutalidad y despilfarro.
La descomunal industria pesquera danesa altamente tecnológica rastrea el Mar del Norte en busca de anguilas de arena, el diminuto pez que da sustento a los cómicos frailecillos. En Dinamarca las anguilas son trituradas en harinas de pescado para alimentar a los pollos de cría industrial. Si el frailecillo llega a extinguirse, Dinamarca deberá soportar la mayor carga de culpa por la tragedia de haber comercializado con el precioso y alegre frailecillo por unos cuantos McNuggets de pollo. Dinamarca apoya la matanza de ballenas y focas en Groenlandia incluyendo la matanza del rorcual en peligro de extinción y de la ballena boreal. Y ahora ataca abiertamente a la Unión Europea por defender a las grandes ballenas de las actividades balleneras ilegales de Japón, Islandia y Noruega. La semana pasada (5 de Junio) la Unión Europea acordó una común posición para apoyar la continuidad de la moratoria global sobre la caza comercial de ballenas. La Unión Europea presentará un frente unido en el encuentro anual de la Comisión Ballenera Internacional (CBI) que tendrá lugar dentro de dos semanas. Sin embargo, Dinamarca ha decidido ser el único miembro de la Unión Europea que se excluye de este frente. “Con esta decisión la Unión Europea puede ejercer ahora un papel importante en la Comisión Ballenera Internacional y utilizar toda su política, moral y peso económico para asegurar una protección más efectiva para las ballenas de todo el mundo”, decía el delegado de medioambiente Stavros Dimas. Dinamarca respondió con hostilidad a esta declaración llamando al movimiento de “imperialismo cultural”. Aunque Dinamarca no apoya manifiestamente la caza comercial de ballenas sí apoya la caza de ballenas en las Islas Faeroe y en Groenlandia, que a pesar de formar parte del reino de Dinamarca no son parte de la Unión Europea. “Durante 20 años Dinamarca ha mantenido la misma postura de apoyo a estas partes del reino”, decía Ole Samsing, diplomático danés en la Unión Europea y delegado en la CBI. “Un imperialismo cultural es lo que está intentando decidir en nombre de estas gentes que no forman parte de Comunidad Europea”, añadía. ¿Cuándo se ha considerado un ‘imperialismo cultural’ preocuparse por el medioambiente y por la protección de las especies? Es una acusación ridícula por parte de un país cuya única reivindicación últimamente es la publicación de tiras cómicas del profeta Mohammed con una bomba en su turbante. Tal es la ignorancia cultural de los dibujantes de viñetas que no saben que los árabes no llevan turbantes. A pesar de todo, Dinamarca defiende las tiras y los daneses han dicho que Dinamarca está protegiendo con ello los valores cristianos ante el extremismo musulmán. Esto es lo que huele a imperialismo cultural y no la inquietud legítima de los países de Europa por detener la matanza ilegal de ballenas. Demuestran un retorcido sentido de los valores morales protegiendo los derechos de los dibujantes de viñetas como defensores de los valores cristianos mientras siguen aprobando la matanza ilegal de ballenas y delfines. El pasado mes, la Comisión Europea pidió a los ministros de medioambiente de la Unión Europea que defendieran a las ballenas en respuesta a la reanulación de Islandia en la caza ilegal de ballenas. En aquel entonces, la comisión visitó Islandia, fuera de la Unión Europea, para comprobar que no se dedicaba a la caza comercial de ballenas. Desde que en 2006 reanudó sus actividades balleneras ilegales, Islandia ha afirmado que la matanza se lleva a cabo con propósitos únicamente científicos. La Comisión Europea niega que esto sea una actividad ballenera legítima y sólo Dinamarca apoya la postura de Islandia. Copenhague anunció a mediados de mayo que recurriría a una medida raramente empleada, la ‘Declaración 25’, un anexo del Tratado de Maastricht. La declaración hace referencia a los estados miembros que tienen territorios, como es el caso de las Islas Faeroe y Groenlandia, fuera de la Unión Europea y que permitiría a Dinamarca no estar obligada a apoyar la posición común. El Sr. Samsing señaló que en realidad esta posición oculta lo que es un mosaico de posiciones entre los estados miembro de la Unión Europea. Reconociendo los animales tales como simios, elefantes y delfines, más inteligentes y socialmente complejos que otros mamíferos, “existen estos estados miembros que no quieren que se mate a ninguna ballena, no importa cual”, dijo el diplomático danés. “Pero luego existen otros miembros que quieren proteger a las especies de ballenas de la extinción, pero que una vez fuera de peligro ya no debería haber ningún problema para reanudar su caza mientras sea llevada bajo estrictas condiciones,” añadió. Como resultado, dijo, la posición común se ha acordado únicamente en vistas del encuentro de la CBI y no más allá. “Pero por supuesto el año que viene la comisión aparecerá con algo parecido y entonces tendremos otra vez este galimatías.”Con esto el Sr. Samsing está diciendo que por alguna razón Dinamarca no apoya la protección de las ballenas aún si se encuentran en peligro de extinción. Por su parte, la comisión descartó las sugerencias de imponer su voluntad: “La posición común fue hecha por el más alto cuerpo [en la Unión Europea] y apoyada por la mayoría de sus estados miembro”, dijo la portavoz delegada de medioambiente, Barbara Heflfferich. Dinamarca es el país que mayor contribuye en la explotación destructiva del mundo oceánico. Su flota pesquera es una de las más avariciosas del mundo y su saqueo en los mares no se ha visto afectado por las graves inquietudes ecológicas sobre la capacidad de los océanos a poder sobrevivir a este incesante asalto. If you are a young man in North America and you have guns, a cowboy hat and boots, a huge pickup,who treats women with disrespect, are prone to violence and ape such bad role models as Clint Eastwood (A man's godda' do what a man's godda' do) then you are probably not dissimilar from the young men up to their waists in dolphin blood. I'm heartily sick of machismo. When it isn't dangerous it is tedious. North America produces strong women and weak men, and the further south you go the stronger the women and the weaker the men. Hence the need to compensate and the greater level of violence among Southern men. If the women of America are not prepared to give their men their balls back the least the men can do is learn to accept themselves and not be so hung up on their image. This is the result of 40 years observing North American men.

This person has no knowledge concerning this event. This event occurred within the Faroe Islands. The government of the Faroe Islands recognize themselves as a separate nation compared to Denmark. They have their own separate flag, and separate sports teams. There for I believe that we should not involve Denmark within this issue, because they are a separate nation. The Faroe islands should be recognized as a different nation, and their for should not be blamed for this incident. This event would be similar to recognizing Great Britain as being an individual nation, compared to separate.

I am a dane and I agree with some of these comments: It's horrible to do such slaughtering on helpless animals. I do not support these kind of things - I am a member of Greenpeace and do my best to live life without hurting anyone unnecessarily.
BUT! There is NO need to write stupid and ignorant comments like: "All danes should do the world a big favour and kill themselves" or "the danes should kill their first born child, instead" This is just childish and it doesn't help anyone! Second of all, when a cruelty like this happens and "Denmark" is to blame, you have to remember that "Denmark" doesn't necessarily mean the Danish people - but the Danish government (which I, by the way, do NOT agree with in ANYTHING!)

And, by the way, the Faeroe Islands may "belong" to Denmark in the same way that Greenland does, (a country that is also known for its barbaric killing of seals and whales) but it is an independent country with its own flag, language and traditions.

It is terrible to see the killing of whales in the Faroe islands and any where else in the world. however Danish laws dos not apply for the Faroe islands and Greenland. The Faroe Islands has their own parlament and is not like Denmark a member of the EU. The Faroe Islands with a population of only 47.000 people recieves app. 100.000.000 $ from Denmark as support every year and are represented in the danish government with 2 seats. The Faroe islands wants complete independence but they still want the money from Denmark because they probably cant exist without it. The fact, that the islands are very hostile and only suitable for some sheeps makes it nesesary for them to have "commercial" fishing. Dont get me wrong , I also think, that the killings should be stopped by all means, and I dont care if it means taking away all the economic support from Denmark and making them starve to death or abandon the Islands, but the force options that denmark has over The Faroe Islands really are limited.

Second: STOP saying all these horrible and nasty things about Denmark, like said above this happend in the Faroe Islands! So before screaming killer at everyone living in Denmark you might want to tjek your facts first.. Third: By making this about hating Denmark and wanting to kill everyone living there you are taking away the focus! Lets focus on the whales and this crime instead! O.K So the Faroe Islands are independent and do not have to abide by Danish laws, but But..what if Denmark stopped sending money to them, stopped altogether unless they stopped this massacre? Unfortunately, I have never seen any products from the Faroe islands on supermarket shelves, only Danish, so I have boycotted Danish products for years. What if millions of people boycott Danish products, Denmark begins to feel it and as a consequence they pressure these islands to stop the murder? It is not that difficult to boycott products or tourism, you know. I have not bought Canadian products in over 30 years, have never visited Canada and I have a tourism agency. I will not visit Denmark either, even if Danes say those murderers are not Danish, they will have to pay a price because the murder is occuring in their territory.

Mi madre era danesa y su padre, Otto Larsen, fue un famoso pintor danés. Su hermana fue la primera mujer juez que hubo en Dinamarca y estábamos orgullosos de su legado danés.
He visto las bahías de las Islas Faeroe teñidas de rojo por la sangre y he escuchado los gritos de las ballenas mortalmente heridas suplicando por sus vidas mientras bestias despiadadas y embriagadas en la masacre se empapan con la sangre caliente de las ballenas, riendo e injuriando entretanto que arremeten repetidamente sus feroces cuchillas contra las ballenas. Es un espectáculo monstruoso y obsceno que el gobierno danés y mucha de la gente de Dinamarca apoya totalmente.
