New rules to prevent porpoise deaths in fishing nets PDF Print E-mail

Credits: WikipediaThere is an increase of harbor porpoises – one of the smallest ocean mammals – inadvertently being caught in gillnets off the U.S. East Coast.

Now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service is announcing new rules designed to keep the beloved animals out of nets.

Fishermen will have to use acoustic net alarms – called pingers – on nets in expanded areas of the sea. These pingers send sound waves out on the low end of porpoises’ auditory range. Studies show the animals avoid nets with pingers far more frequently than those that don’t. Read Full Article by bdaley
