Sea Shepherd in the Galapagos

Since 2000, Sea Shepherd has maintained a strong, positive presence in the Galapagos Islands. From patroling the Marine Reserve stopping illegal fishing activities, to busting shark finners, to educating the local youth, Sea Shepherd carries out its mission of promoting ocean conservation using a wide range of methods and actions. The Galapagos is our line in the sand. If humanity cannot protect such a unique and diverse ecosystem, we will not be able to protect any ecosystem. The Galapagos is a challenge and battlefield for the effort to halt human greed and destruction. These Enchanted Isles are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this means all of us have a responsibility to help protect them from illegal exploitation.

Last chance to save the vaquita porpoise from extinction? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 07 November 2009 10:39

This is a crucial time for the critically endangered vaquita porpoise (Phocoena sinus). Despite conservation efforts, the vaquita population has dropped more than 50 percent in the past three years as hundreds of porpoises have died in commercial fishing nets. Now just 150 vaquitas remain in their sole habitat, a portion of the Gulf of California off the coast of Mexico, and the species exists at the razor's edge of extinction. Please save these beautiful creatures. They need our protection as some humans do not regard animals of any kind equal to human treatment.

I'm glad to see that the Mexican government is taking actions to protect the vaquita, but it's so disheartening to hear that the fishermen are using the money to buy new boats and motors. I also think we need to raise more awareness of the plight of the vaquita. I recently signed a petition to save the vaquita and there were only 65 other signatures on it and the goal was 5000. Please do all you can to spread the word about the vaquita.
