Driver plows through protected birds near Astoria

For the second time in a week, a driver has deliberately driver over protected sea birds, this time, on Sunset Beach area by Fort Stevens State Park. On June 26, a driver plowed through birds in Ocean Park, on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula north of Astoria, killing 34. This time, a young man with dark hair in a white, two-door, older Toyota Forerunner was spotted about 3 p.m. Friday speeding through flocks of birds. There were three or four people in the vehicle.

It’s not known for the second incident how many birds were killed but a passerby brought a wounded Caspian tern to the Wildlife Center of the North Coast in Astoria, which later died.

Seabirds are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act and killing or maiming them is against the law.

Witnesses are asked to call the Oregon State Police. A private citizen has offered a $500 reward leading to the arrest of the person responsible.
