Drive To Save Sea Turtles

(From gulf-daily-news.com)- Bahrain is launching a national campaign to help protect its sea turtles, it was announced yesterday. It comes after a study by the Bahrain Centre for the Studies and Research (BCSR) that revealed 170 sea turtles died due to people fishing with nets in the first quarter of last year. Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources and Wildlife marine expert Ali Mansoor said that there was evidence that fishing nets were the main reason in the death of sea turtles in Bahrain.

“The study covered activities in the Northern, Western and Southern sea areas of Bahrain,” he said.

“It revealed that 99 per cent of the cases sampled were of green turtles and one case of a hawksbill turtle.”

The study was discussed by the National Sea Turtle Protection Committee at its first meeting aimed at setting up a national campaign to protect sea turtles in Bahrain.
