DNA to help catch whale and dolphin poachers

The government said Monday that it plans to use DNA from whales and dolphins as evidence to convict poachers. An official said that the DNA will help catch illegal poachers who try to get away with catching whales and dolphins by cutting off the animals” heads, tails and fins.

The official, Hsia Jung-sheng, said that the government has a comprehensive databank on DNA from whales and dolphins. Using molecular biotechnology, experts can identify the species of whales or dolphins from a scrap of meat. Last week, coastguards discovered over 1.3 tons of dolphin meat in the northeast fishing port of Suao.
